Reminders for this saturday's upcat review (june 27, 09)

Each student must make 6 flashcards (A,B,C,D,E,X) and each letter has a specific color as background:
A-red, B-green, C-yellow, D-blue, E-pink, X-black. They can use art paper for this. The letters can be made as "holes" on the art paper. The powerpoint file is for the outline of the letters so that they will have the same size of letters. Each letter is 1/4 of the short art paper. The jpeg file shows you the expected outcome of their flashcards. They can paste this on a white folder para mas matibay. They will be using this again on july 11.

Here's for the people without 6th ed and those who are too lazy to look into their 6th eds. :P

Find the center, vertices, foci, and extremities of the minor axis of the ellipse. Draw a sketch of the ellipse, and show the foci.

10. 9x^2+4y^2-18x+16y-11=0

Find an equation of the ellipse having the given properties, and draw a sketch of the ellipse.

20. Foci at (-5,0) and (5,0) and for which the constant referred to in Definition 10.2.1 is 20.

28. Foci at (2,3) and (2,-7) and the length of the semiminor axis is two-thirds of the length of the semimajor axis.

32. The orbit of the earth around the sun is elliptical in shape with the sun at one focus and a semimajor axis of length 92.9 million miles. If the distance between the foci is 3.16 million miles, find (a) how close the earth gets tothe sun and (b) the greatest possible distance between the earth and the sun.

34. The arch of a bridge is in the shape of a semiellipse having a horizontal span of 40 m and a height of 16 m at its center. How high is the arch 9 m to the right or left of the center?
